Iran has issued a direct threat to strike the People’s Palace (the official residence of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa) in Damascus, as well as two major luxury hotels — the Four Seasons Damascus and the Sheraton Damascus — claiming they are being used by American, Israeli, and British military advisors and experts.
The threat was reported on March 26 by Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, which stated that these locations have become gathering points for foreign military personnel involved in operations against Iranian interests.
Iran’s Ultimatum
According to Fars, Iran has warned hotel owners across the Middle East that any facility providing accommodation or support to foreign military personnel will be considered a “legitimate military target.”
This latest escalation comes as part of Iran’s broader campaign to deter and retaliate against US and Israeli operations in the region following the start of direct strikes on Iranian territory on February 28.
US Response
In reaction to the threats, the US Embassy in Syria issued a security alert urging American citizens in Damascus to prepare to “shelter in place” and remain in secure locations.
The warning highlights the growing risk that civilian infrastructure in Syria could be drawn into the wider Iran-Israel conflict.
Tactical and Strategic Context
• The People’s Palace and the two five-star hotels are located in central Damascus, close to key government and diplomatic areas.
• Iran appears to be expanding its targeting doctrine beyond traditional military bases to include any location perceived as supporting US or Israeli activities.
• This approach mirrors Iran’s previous warnings regarding facilities in the Gulf and elsewhere, aiming to raise the cost of hosting foreign forces.
The development further complicates Syria’s delicate position, as the country attempts to navigate relations with both Iran (a long-time ally) and the United States amid the ongoing regional war.
